Google: open up engineers' 20% projects

I have been wondering why Google’s 20% projects aren’t also open to other engineers outside of Google.
As an example, if an engineer is working on a particularly successful project internally why not open up parts or the whole project for collaboration by others outside of Google? This would help ensure certain projects that are good but hard for a single engineer to work on don’t die off and have a chance beyond Google. The Internet and software are well-suited for this type of thing in general.

What are the intellectual property ramifications of this proposal?

Certain software/hardware projects or parts of them should be encouraged and supported to be opened up under MIT or something similar… seeing as Google doesn’t make money from selling software anyway it seems like a win-win.
It may have some security concerns but that could be resolved with better code? :)

Maybe google engineers should be sent to IRAQ, they could probably solve it with some neato software approaches… i think Google could do it in their 20%, so thats like 365*.2= 73 days! Mission accomplished!

I love google’s idea to promote 20% of the time to be used on personal projects. Great way to increase creativity and productivity
