Tesco controls over 30% of UK supermarket sector

Flag As Inappropriatehuangcjz huangcjz about 1 year ago about Tesco

Tesco has been repeatedly accused of having a monopoly in the UK supermarket sector – in January 2006 its market share rose to 30.6%, up from 29% the previous quarter. The UK supermarket sector is under investigation by the Competition Comisssion for anti-competitive behaviour. Customers report that they like Tesco due to its low prices, good customer service and environmentally-friendly stance – however, local groceries, butchers, bakers, and newsagents feel that Tesco is affecting their businesses by opening too many new stores, with two Tesco stores being within 5-10 minutes’ walking distance of one another in several cases. For example, there are three Tesco stores in Inverness. Several local Tesco Express stores (for example, a fourth store in Inverness and a store in Finchley, London) have had planning permission refused due to local councillers and campaigners’ concerns over their effect upon local businesses. In Finchley, Tesco was accused of using Trojan horse tactics by using the cover of the premises’ leaseholder, a carpet shop, to apply for a change to the planning conditions.

Not sure...

I am not sure that Tesco has much control of this aspect of its business, unless it is using anticompetitive tactics to achieve its significant foothold on the UK food retail market. How is Tesco impacting society, local communities, the environment, the well-being of consumers and employees (all potential subjects of interesting, helpful new stories)? We don’t have Tesco here… so I can’t share much but I am very excited to learn more.
