Sun Microsystems going the green way.

Flag As Inappropriateanirbanz anirbanz about 1 year ago about Sun Microsystems

Sun Microsystems is taking steps to make it’s servers more energy efficient. According to Sun Data centers alone consume 2-3 percentage of the world’s energy, with all IT making upto 4-5 percentage. The company has switched tape based storage rather than disk based storage which consumes more energy.Sun spent 4.1 billion dollars on it. 55 % of the company’s NY based PR employees have given up their offices, thus saving 30,000 tons in carbon emission. This is definitely make a huge impact, with other big computer manufacturers like Dell following suite. Hope to see more company’s in that space following this path.

That VP is pulling numbers out from where the sun don't shine

IT accounting for 4-5% of total world energy use seem ridiculously high. Even that percentage of the world electricity use would be outrageous. In another article, AMD claims Global Data Center Energy Costs at $7.2 Billion but most references on global electricity production put it at 13-15 trillions of kWh.

I really like what Sun is doing with their Blackbox and other projects. Unfortunately, quoting figures like those without hard data makes them look foolish. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Repeating numbers from a news story based on a competitors marketing copy just isn’t cool. Shame on Mr. Douglas for spouting such nonsense.

And if he’s got facts or was misquoted, here would be a good place to set the record straight. Any Sun people reading this? :)
