Should Starbucks' store in Forbidden City...be forbidden!?

Flag As Inappropriaterod rod about 1 year ago about Starbucks

There has been much controversy since this Starbucks store opened in China’s Forbidden City (CNN 2000). Early discussions led to the removal of a large sign but it was not until recent protests prompted by Chinese newscaster and blogger Rui Chenggang that Starbuck’s Forbidden City presence came under serious scrutiny. This time it may be closed down completely.

Seeing as Starbuck’s has continued to respect the Chinese government and its people’s demands, it doesn’t seem fair that it be required to close its doors completely. Starbucks was originally invited to open in the Forbidden City by Palace Managers in order to raise money for maintenance of the complex.

From a distance, it appears as though this move by Starbucks has made more of a positive impact than anything else.

Food for thought

Would it be fair if the people were not allowed to decide what stores were opened (by a foreign corporation) in their city? Culture and religion are extremely important, and they could be more important than the aforementioned manager’s agenda.
