This article describes the impact of poor power-saving options included with XP. A vague estimation places the excess energy cost of always-on computers at $25 billion since XP’s inception.
While the validity of this figure is certainly debatable, it raises an important issue: with increasing omnipresence of technology, companies must design their products to respect the existing infrastructure, including energy resources.
Microsoft should be applauded for recognizing this problem and aiming to resolve it. We’ll see whether Vista lives up to this promise upon full release.
