free compact fluorescent light bulbs

Flag As Inappropriatebmevans bmevans over 4 years ago about San Diego Gas and Electric Company

The City of San Diego Environmental Services Department along with SDG&E conducted a free light bulb exchange today (November 30, 2007) at La Jolla Del Sol (housing property of UC San Diego). In exchange for up to 5 of your old incandescent bulbs, they gave away free compact fluorescent light bulbs (either 13W, equivalent to 60W incandescent, or 23W, equivalent to 100W incandescent—-your choice). Apparently, SDG&E already does this for senior citizens and has hosted several city-wide light bulb exchange events in the past (at Imperial Beach in February ‘07; in North Park in August ‘07; at Birch Aquarium in September ‘07; at the First Lutheran Church in downtown San Diego in October ‘07). This activity, and associated community awareness of energy efficiency, is crucial for reducing our energy usage. Furthermore, it’s great that a power and electric company is promoting the use of cleaner energy, and distributing free compact fluorescent bulbs!

Compact fluorescent bulbs generate more toxic waste than traditional incandescent bulbs. A single broken compact fluorescent dumps enough mercury in to the ground that it would take 50^2 meters of earth to safely absorb it.

micker: you’re right in that they do consist mercury. However, it can be recycled pretty efficiently and doesn’t contaminate the ground unless you dump the bulbs. So collect your CFB’s in a cardboard box and bring them with you when you visit IKEA the next time.

That said, I eagerly wait for LEDs to become economically feasible for everyday use (we already use 15-22W LED headlamps that could burn a hole in the night), but until then, I think it’s safe to say that CFB’s are an ecologically better option than traditional bulbs.
