MicroPlace, an eBay subsidiary, is a new online brokerage for so-called microinvestments, small loans given to third-world entrepreneurs. It’s kind of what Kiva.org is, except that it is a SEC-approved brokerage, giving it the possibility to actually pay interest to the investors (and securitize and thus trade loans). The founder of MicroPlace, Tracey Pettengill Turner, has a long history working for pioneering financial institutions such as the Nobel Prize winning Grameen Bank.
I find this a great step in making mikrofinance more mainstream and accessible to the normal people. Wish them all the luck.
