Comcast Corp raises cable prices when it is already charging a huge amount for little service

Flag As Inappropriatealfredtoh alfredtoh about 1 year ago about Comcast Corp

Taking a look at the most recent bill from Comcast, my Full service cable subscription was $60.. and other “add-on” services were also increased without any notice or warning. Like HD-channel subcriptions went up from $10 to $17. Starz subscription went from $7 to $17.

Comcast is the monopoly in some states and cities and so they raise their prices like no one cares. When I called to question the raise, I was pushed to “sign up” for a promotion “3 for 1 for 1 low price $99. Basically its digital phone+digital cable+cable internet for $99. So for the same price, they try to get you to dump your phone service provider+internet provider. But wait, the promotion only last for 6 months, so after 6 months, your “promo” rate is raised. In order to push up sell to subscribers, they are “bullying” subscribers, like myself, who do not really care about their other services and had to suffer a “price hike” because some smart marketing jack-a$$ came out with an “evil” scheme to up sell their services that no one cares about.

Here’s some news report about the 2007 price hike: http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070107/NEWS01/701070349/1006 http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1329300&secid=1

no, they are not a monopoly...

As far as television content goes, you can always watch free TV. As far as internet service goes, there is always a free, or almost free dialup alternative. Or, you could go to a business that offers wifi access to its customers. Comcast has every right to change whatever it wants for its service. The market will correct itself. If consumers find Comcast’s service too expensive then they will cancel the service and go with a competitor or a different connection model altogether. If that happens Comcast will lower its prices to stay competitive.

Comcast has every right to change whatever price its consumers will pay.

Dont like the price? Cancel the service. It’s your choice, vote with your dollars.

Close enough to a monopoly for me

I disagree, micker. In the area I live, the only over-the-wire solution for TV is Comcast. Broadcast is a no-go. I get one very fuzzy channel. Perhaps it would be better if I invested heavily in reception equipment, I don’t know. As for broadband internet (for which I cannot seriously consider dial-up an alternative or competitor), it is either Comcast cable or Bellsouth (now, AT&T) DSL. Both differ drastically in quality depending upon your area in this town. They are roughly equivalent in price (though the DSL tops at 6 Mbps and cable at 8 Mbps).

I wish there truly was competition for my TV and internet services. I’d love to have 10/10 up/down fiber internet. I’d love to have ale carte cable service. I’d love to have much lower prices. I’d love to have more accountability (broadband companies can have a 6 Mbps plan and an 8 Mbps, but if you only get 6 Mbps on your 8 Mbps plan, TOO BAD! And just watch what happens when you downgrade to 6 Mbps!)

You Pay more BUT get Less

Im on Charter Comm Basic Cable NOT Digital cable & we have the worse programming ever & they raise rates each time & for what. ALL CABLE COMPANIES. Basic cable does NOT provide: Hallmark Channel, TV Land, American Life TV, Fox Movie Channel alone for basic users. & now add phone & Internet service. Make it worth my time in the Bundle.

Comcast rep gave me great advise
I called in to Comcast to see what the status of my Internet plan was. They told me I should actually be paying less than I was due to a promotion they are running. [read more]
