Sony is repressing innovation and stifling free speech!

Flag As Inappropriatemicker micker about 1 year ago about Sony

Sony, the inventor of the Blue-Ray DVD technology has decided to censor what content may or may not be released on its new Blue-Ray Disc technology. Sony is apparently requiring the manufacturers licensed to priduce the discs to gain approval of any media content before the discs are manufactured. Digital content producer Digital Playground has been forced by Sony to release its movies on HD Discs as Sony’s manufacturing partners have refused to produce discs for Digial Playground because Sony has decided that they will not allow adult movies to appear on its new technology. One would think that Sony would have learned their lesson 30 years ago as this is the same stance they took with their BETA Tape technology. Should manufacturer of video playback systems be able to censor what types of movies their systems will play?

I don’t see it as inherently harmful to society. With such tunnel vision, they’ll phase themselves out of the market anyway.

Hmmm… from the IGN link: “Update: Sony is now denying claims of a porn ban in Blu-ray. Speaking to Arstechnica, Marty Gordon, vice-chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotions Committee, stated: “There is not a prohibition against adult content. The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry.” Would definitely be interested to see if any news outlets get hold of this and dig up anything interesting.

And so begins the downfall of Blu-Ray

I remember hearing somewhere that it was porn which made the VHS tape win the battle over BETA tape.. you think they would’ve learned.

most folks are suprised to learn that the adult entertainment industry has been the driving force behind many, if not most technological innovations.
