Coming Soon: (Almost) Wal-Mart Stores in India

Flag As Inappropriaterod rod over 2 years ago about Wal-Mart

Beginning in 2007, Wal-Mart branded stores will be opening in India: Wal-Mart will enter venture in India

Wal-Mart’s Superstores Gain Entry Into India

Although Wal-Mart already does a lot of business with India, the company does not maintain stores there. How will this new venture compare with Wal-Mart’s other retail operations? What is worth noting in this recent announcement is Wal-Mart’s equal partnership with Bharti Enterprises. Known best for its India-based telecom and wireless services. Together, they plan to target India’s middle-class.

Will this joint venture improve the retail giants global sustainability efforts and environmental footprint? It is too early to say but India can undoubtedly expect serious local community and economic changes very soon. Wal-Mart has already penetrated the Chinese retail market with mixed results.

Yay, Wal-mart!

Assuming that Indian consumer culture takes a liking to superstores, this is wonderful news. Wal-mart will increase employment, supply an enormous variety of goods at competitive prices, and increase its profits markedly, which benefits US shareholders and increases our tax revenue. Indian consumers will essentially get a raise from having cheaps good available to them, which enriches their poverty-stricken society. Sounds great to me.

I agree with dannyfresh. Increasing jobs and the goods avaliable to the Indian public is not such a bad thing. Perhaps, this is an issue that judgement should be reserved on until we see what impact these new stores have.
