Microsoft patents BlueJ

Michael Kölling blogs about his concerns about Microsoft filing a patent that could compromise the survival of BlueJ: http://www.bluej.org/mrt/?p=21

BlueJ is a lightweight IDE for students learning Java. It is free academic software and I used it to learn Java myself. One of the key features of BlueJ is the so-called ‘object bench’ which allows for easy manipulation, querying and management of Java objects.

You may think that Microsoft copying the core functionality from BlueJ, namely the ‘object bench’ without attribution isn’t a big issue. I don’t think it is. But patenting it is.

From Michael Kölling’s blog:

“Now, with the patent filing, the situation is clear. Filing for patent is claiming original invention. Microsoft managers know it’s not true. They are lying. It stinks.”
