Exxon cuts ties to global warming skeptics

Flag As Inappropriatephilipkd philipkd about 1 year ago about Exxon Mobil

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16593606/ Oil giant also in talks to look at curbing greenhouse gases.

Oil major Exxon Mobil Corp. is engaging in industry talks on possible U.S. greenhouse gas emissions regulations and has stopped funding groups skeptical of global warming claims — moves that some say could indicate a change in stance from the long-time foe of limits on heat-trapping gases.

Exxon, along with representatives from about 20 other companies, is participating in talks sponsored by Resources for the Future, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit. The think tank said it expected the talks would generate a report in the fall with recommendations to legislators on how to regulate greenhouse emissions.

Real or fake?

Is this the oil industry equivalent to the resources that big tobacco companies are providing to help people stop smoking and encourage youth not to start?

http://www.pmusa.com/en/quitassist/in…

I would like to see Exxon dedicate a significant amount of resources (significant in terms of percent of total revenue) to these types of efforts and research. It is difficult for me to conclude that this is much more than a PR play, considering how much Exxon enjoyed selling oil over past record-breaking quarters.

Exxon Mobile did great with profits this past year. I really hope they put some of those profits to good use. I’m watching and am hopeful.

I think this is a turn for the better, but does still not make me give thumbs up to Exxon Mobile. Considering that they were previously funding those same sceptics they now cut the ties with, it seems to me they have just finally noted that the public opinion is turning so much against them that it outplays the victories gained with their former (arguably dirty) tactics.

That said, even this is better than what we’ve been accustomed to see from them. Just a bit too little, way too late.

However misguided

So, ExxonMobile is drinking the global warming koolaid. There are two divergent approaches, I wonder which one they are taking. One: Global warming is caused by people and their actions. This is impossible to prove as we just don’t have enough information and aren’t as brilliant as we think we are as “modeling” the Earth and it’s climate. By the way, modeling is another way of saying “guessing”. The second: We should limit the amount of crap we spew into the air, water and ground. There is no reasonable person that would disagree with that course of action. I would hope that ExxonMobile was going down the second road. The first one is too politicized for anything good to come of it.

Oh great. Some talks after they have spent around $16m attempting to create uncertainty about global warming in the past 7 years.

I have no idea why, with all the resources they have, why they wouldn’t want to invest massive amounts of resources into discovering the next energy resource. To me that seems to be the most profitable market in the future, maybe even more than high tech. I have no idea why they wouldn’t take this opportunity before anyone has put massive amounts of money into it and be the leading experts and own the rights to all the new tech etc…

Maybe that’s why I don’t run a large company…or maybe that’s why I should…

totally off topic here…if the devs are reading…I would really like to see a spell check here. I am a terrible speller.

Exxon succumbs to false hysteria surrounding Global Warming

ashotinthedark about 1 year ago

It’s too bad that a corporate entity had given up its efforts to find the truth behind global warming. Forced by a media with an agenda and ill informed society, Exxon has given up the chance to do something good for the free market.

This should be taken down as inaccurate:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/internation…

The Guardian says that the American Enterprise Institute is funded by Exxon, and they recently offered 10 grand to anyone who will dispute the recent IPCC report.

EDIT: Instead I just rated it as very harmful. Lying through the media is harmful.

Exxon isn’t even LOOKING in the right direction. Wrap your head around this figure… $75,000.

That’s the amount of money Exxon made EVERY MINUTE, OF EVERY DAY last year….HOW MUCH WENT INTO renewable resources?

Laf, I won’t hold my breathe….

Earth warming bogus??

Maybe Exxon knows something we dont know on global warming??? Do we want more Taxes for the Global warming issue or is this more Leftist liberal Takeover game on we “dumb consumers” for our money. Take global warming to Indie Science Team for study. 1. Does Global Warming or Cooling exisit? 2. Threat, Yes or No. Thats IT. Very doable. Still Exxon should fund: Hydrogen fuel Fuel cells Liq coal fuel E85 Ethanol for cars.
