Wal-Mart Fires Innovative New Marketing Director

over 2 years ago about Wal-Mart
There is an interesting front page article in the Wall Street Journal today about the firing of Julie Roehm, Wal-Mart’s Senior Vice President for Marketing Communications.
Roehm was an aggressive, controversial, and successful marketer hired away from Chrysler. While Wal-Mart is publicy pointing to potential violations of the their gift policies (Roehm was wined and dined by Draft FCB as they pursued Wal-Mart’s advertsing business), it seems that a clash of culture is much more to blame.
What does this have to do with social responsibility you ask? Well, nothing on the surface, but it represents a dangerous precendent against innovation within the company. Wal-Mart is talking an admittedly positive game about many of its environmental initiatives, but whether it is institutionally aligned to support change and progress is a large open question.
