Is Windows Vista bad for the environment?

Flag As Inappropriatemigraineboy migraineboy about 1 year ago about Microsoft

The British Green Party has released a statement claiming that Windows Vista will harm the environment. In order to use many of the built-in digital rights management (DRM) technologies you will be forced to upgrade to video and sound cards that support this DRM. They also claim that increased processor time needed to check for and decode DRM will increase energy usage of the average PC. They suggest that PC users switch to free software.

I agree – and let’s switch this site off until we can make it run on organic cereal.

FOSS Operating systems collectively use more power ...

licoricewhip about 1 year ago

Why? Because it can run on older hardware, giving people a reason to keep old hardware plugged in and running. When new stuff comes around, people have the urge to still use the old hardware… somehow… and FOSS stuff fits that want/need.

This is just a jab at Microsoft with the “suggestion” that free software won’t harm the environment.

Not just that but...

Having used Vista (beta 1) for a while now one of the most annoying things is that the default is for it to power down to standby by default ie pressing the “power button” on the ‘start’ button (I know it isn’t but I’m sure it will be called that for a long time to come) you have to select the drop down and choose switch off for it to actually shut down your PC as it would be with XP, 98, Linux, OSX etc. I doubt many novice users are ever going to notice that drop down thus it will do more harm to the environment reagardless of new hardware :(
