Should Wal-Mart Drop Left Behind Game?

Flag As Inappropriateperpetualmotion perpetualmotion over 2 years ago about Wal-Mart

I hate to pick on Wal-Mart twice in one week, but this was too good to resist.. from today’s San Francisco Chronicle article entitled ‘Convert or Die’ Game divides Christians; Some ask Wal-Mart to Drop Left Behind:

In Left Behind, set in perfectly apocalyptic New York City, the Antichrist is personified by fictional Romanian Nicolae Carpathia, secretary-general of the United Nations and a People magazine “Sexiest Man Alive.” Players can choose to join the Antichrist’s team, but of course they can never win on Carpathia’s side. The enemy team includes fictional rock stars and folks with Muslim-sounding names, while the righteous include gospel singers, missionaries, healers and medics. Every character comes with a life story.

For those scratching their head in disbelief, the game is based on the popular evangelical Left Behind series that has sold more than 60 million copies. Six-Zero-Million.

Now, I am normally a staunch free speech advocate and so it is with some trepidation that I criticize Wal-Mart for carrying a game based on content. I would balk at the same Christian activists attempting to remove games that they deemed “violent” or “pornographic”, so I find myself in a slightly hypocritical position.

I wonder what others think of Wal-Mart’s decision to carry a game with such an overtly discriminatory message? Are we shooting the messenger when it is the purchasers of the game to blame?

Wavy Lines and "Family Values"

ryan over 2 years ago

I too find it interesting that Wal-Mart has attempted to draw wavy lines in the sand in an effort to sanitize its product lineup to incorporate its perceptions of what it defines to follow “family values.” Censorship of CD sales is actually so significant that some consumers are speaking out that they want sanitized CDs to be marked clearly, which I definitely agree with. I don’t want watered down versions of my music, but I identify with the concern of some parents who simply don’t want to expose their children to certain perceptions and language until they are ready. The hardest thing for me personally to swallow (and I know that there are so many others out there that I don’t need to do the google search) is that Wal-Mart has clearly taken a very aggressive stance against material that doesn’t promote “family values,” yet it has taken a fairly aggressive stance in favor of certain highly questionable products, mainly its offering of firearms and ammunition.

If I led the largest company in the world, and I truly was committed to doing the right thing and selling products that would support my consumers’ family values, wouldn’t it be a good idea to ask consumers what those values are, and to perhaps take the safer bet when it comes to these decisions? Or are firearms truly part of the American family value system, and I missing something?

"Family Values" indeed

daniel about 1 year ago

I think that any product advocating militant religious superiority is inherently dangerous. While the makers of the series certainly have the right to make it (though I suppose it comes close to advocating hate crimes, so perhaps not, IANAL) this has no place on the shelves of responsible mainstream retailers who purport to advocate family values.

Granted, this assumes WalMart is actually a responsible retailer. Either way, this is one of the many reasons I won’t shop there.

As a Christian...

As a Christian who’s read up on the premillenial eschatology (the whole left behind model) I can say the game is insane.

Sources of Credibility or Bias opinions???

Hey, with so many people having an opinion about this game, how many have actually played it? And what credibility do they have? Focus on the Family has publications which can set the record straight for everyone…at http://www.pluggedinonline.com/thiswe….
