Yahoo Forces Flickr Users to Open Yahoo Accounts

Flag As Inappropriatenixon nixon about 1 year ago about Yahoo

Flickr have announced that all users must merge their account with a Yahoo account…and old school Flickr users are annoyed. When I first heard the news I didn’t really think it would effect me, but now I’ve faced the reality of trying to create an unwanted Yahoo account with some random user name (seriously…EVERYTHING is taken) and I’m now beginning to agree.

At the same time Flickr also announced that contacts would be restricted to 3000. Not a problem for me, but I can understand how that would annoy customers with more than 3000 contacts.

This seems very badly thought through…unless their priority is to force Flickr users to use other Yahoo services. Their attitude to loyal long-term paying customers has been, “stop moaning…get on with it.”

seriously…EVERYTHING is taken

Did you consider just using your Flickr username with ‘_Flickr’ or ‘_Yahoo’ appended to it?

Yes, Yahoo is requiring that you have a free account with them to use one of their services. Terrible. Just terrible.

Yahoo! would do well to accept OpenID and it would make things easier for their customers because they wouldn’t face the difficulty of choosing a new unique user name.
