Yahoo Employee Holiday Gift Is A Gift To Charity

Flag As Inappropriateperpetualmotion perpetualmotion about 1 year ago about Yahoo

Silicon Valley blog Valleywag covered Yahoo’s decision to forgeo the annual employee holiday gift in favor of funding employee gifts to charity (one commentor on the blog notes that this is a personal gift of the founders, not corporate money). From an internal Yahoo email:

We’re giving you the opportunity to donate $100 to one of over a million charities (under 4 partner organizations). So for a few minutes we invite you to stop making a difference for Yahoo! and make a difference for someone else.

I find this especially cool because it reveals how much employees are interested in contributing toward a good cause, not just expecting an employer to do it for them. It makes perfect sense to have employees and employers working together to make a positive impact, as long as Yahoo isn’t attempting to take credit for its employees’ contributions, as did Microsoft earlier this year.
