As a way to cut energy use, it could not be simpler. Unscrew a light bulb that uses a lot of electricity and replace it with one that uses much less.
While it sounds like a promising idea, it turns out that the long-lasting, swirl-shaped light bulbs known as compact fluorescent lamps are to the nation’s energy problem what vegetables are to its obesity epidemic: a near perfect answer, if only Americans could be persuaded to swallow them.
But now Wal-Mart Stores, the giant discount retailer, is determined to push them into at least 100 million homes. And its ambitions extend even further, spurred by a sweeping commitment from its chief executive, H. Lee Scott Jr., to reduce energy use across the country, a move that could also improve Wal-Mart’s appeal to the more affluent consumers the chain must win over to keep growing in the United States.
“The environment,” Mr. Scott said, “is begging for the Wal-Mart business model.”

Whether this is opportunism or doing the right thing will be really hard to determine. This is the same store that encourages RV-ers to Wal Mart across america in their land whales, so… you know. It looks a little like they’re riding a wave. But hey, if they accidentally do the right thing, it’s still the right ting.

I think it’s a good move, right reasons or wrong, but I also think that it won’t do a thing to help Wal-Mart gain ground with affluent consumers. You can buy energy saving bulbs anywhere, after all.
Hopefully it does help take the bulbs more mainstream, though. I still won’t be buying mine at Wal-Mart :P

does wal-mart use them or just sell them?
Tough to complain about this one

You have to give Wal-Mart credit for trying here – read the NYTimes article and try to find the opportunism. The CEO met with climate researchers on their terms and asked what he could do. Everybody knows the bulbs are ugly but they’re putting them in their lamps and fixtures – something a retail consultant would cringe at. I’m thrilled to see Wal-Mart use its muscle in such a positive way.
Wal*mart is using them!
