Google, Politics, and Hypocrisy in NC

CNet Google Blog

There have been some negative stories about Google recently, but I have always been willing to give them the benefit of the doubt based on their past stated objectives—and the fact that I’ve been a fan of Google (the fact that they set up the Google Foundation ‘bought’ a good deal of goodwill from me).

However, this article simply illustrates that Google is just another business, willing to “do evil” in order to promote their own interests. For the hypocrisy alone, I have to call them out for shady business practices…for me it’s just additional evidence that Google is now just another company out to maximize its profits. While that’s not inherently evil, what I do think is evil is that it continues to insist you can make money without doing evil (Item #6 on its Top 10 list), while it simultaneously embraces less-than-reputable (some would say “evil”) business practices to further its own corporate goals…

The process is what the process is…however, what bothers me the most is the way local governments will offer millions in tax payer dollars to attract businesses that will have a significantly lower impact on the overall community.

I think it’s embarrassing that local officials are blinded by the “Big Name” companies. If this was some smaller tech firm looking to set up the same type of data center, you can believe that they wouldn’t have even been considered for a tax break, let alone the exorbitant amount that Google is going to “save” through the deal with the county.

The government is setting the citizens up for a huge net loss, and I think it’s very irresponsible of Google to encourage such agreements.
