After watching Prince’s rendition of the Foo Fighter’s song “Best of You” on the Superbowl yesterday I felt like listening to the original. I soon realized that this would not be as easy as it sounds. I bought the cd soon after it came out in 2005 and never put it on my new computer. Last night I attempted this with no success. After about an hour or searching this morning I came up with some startling information.
Any CD on this list [ http://cdtechsettlement.sonybmg.ca/en… ] has included in it software which has been described by many as spyware. There are certain security holes in the software which would allow worms and viruses to attack the computer the cd is played on. On top of all that this software is installed BEFORE the EULA agreement is accepted by the user and is needed for the user to play or rip the cd.
You can read more on that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Son…
If you have found that one of your cds is included on the list above, visit http://cdtechsettlement.sonybmg.ca/en/ to get Sony BMG to send you a free digital copy of the cd without the malovent software as well as other benefits if you qualify. There’s a link on that page to Sony BMG America for all of you south of the border.

I haven’t bought a single CD or appliance from Sony after the debacle. It just shows so bad taste (not only the rootkit but the whole idea of preventing people from taking wholly lawful copies of their CDs).

Ah its funny how an old product like the ‘CD’ which sits on some of our shelves-
its a generational thing; I have had over 8,000 CD’s-could be holding on to old technology like the Sony DRM attempt. But come on, its fair game for anybody who produces media to try to protect their rights to advertise next to those items. I’m only not fond of DRM for the simple reason that it does more then just pin me down, it tries to eventually evade my computers working environment for its own use. I like DRM only for the fact that the profits made from track-able plays on peoples computers should be paying for the artists lifestyle who create the fresh content.Related Image

Aw, come on, this piece of news is so ancient…Even the news of the settlement is getting old now. But I suppose there are always people who don’t know about it, so ok.
One thing that’s most interesting: how many dollars will SonyBMG give you for breaking into your PC, making it vurnerable to attacks, takeovers and virii, and collecting data about you? Right. Now, how many thousands of dollars does the RIAA ask for every song you may pirate? Rrright.
By the way, it’s ‘scandal’, not ‘scandel’??
