Wal-Mart teams up with unions and US government to introduce major health care campaign

Wow. Wal-Mart making “amends” with unions… impossible you might say. Wal-Mart, with over 1.3 million employees, is the US’s largest non-government employer. It has been continually scrutinized by unions and others for its inadequate health plans and low wages (more info on what Wal-Mart provides or rather doesn’t provide is available here).
This may be a big step for many Americans and Wal-Mart in particular. Another related dotherightthing story discusses Wal-Mart’s new generic drug prescription program.
Although this is just the beginning of what’s to come, it is an important step in the right direction. It will be very interesting to see if a large employer like Wal-Mart can provide health care programs where the government has failed to do so. In terms of taking action (albeit slow) this is a positive activity by Wal-Mart but time will tell how and who will benefit in the end.

Balance

I, too, applaud Wal-Mart’s efforts to work with its traditional opponents in the guise of SEIU. The same kudos to SEIU for working with Wal-Mart on this important issue. However, getting information from WalMartWatch (one of your links) is no more balanced than getting it from press releases on Wal-Mart’s own website. That site is run by one of the unions constantly fighting Wal-Mart and they have an obvious interest in emphasizing the negative.

I should have highlighted the “potential” for biased info with that particular link although I did run through the list of things there before referencing it here.
With that said, as you mention, be warned that there is the “potential” for bias with that link from WalMartWatch ;) thanks for the comment.

Rororo: I don’t necessarily agree that it is in the interests of Wal-Mart Watch to highlight all the negative points. I’d say they have an interest in making Wal-Mart a better workplace and while that is still opinionated, I think there’s a slight difference.
If Wal Mart can do this, any Co can??
