Toyota selling SUVs?

Is Toyota killing it’s brand with the Toyota Tundra ?

The NYTimes has the article.

The recent leanings of this company have been towards greener, more fuel efficient vehicles.

It seems you can’t turn around without having an advert thrust upon you; telling you how green Toyota is now.

So why have they now gone out and spent $3 billion to promote something that is far too impractical for all but the most industrial of uses?

My guess is that people like buying and driving trucks. So, since people like driving trucks, then Toyota will build trucks. Seems like a pretty straightforward econ101, supply/demand issue. Until people decide they don’t want pick up trucks, auto companies will continue to produce them. I would say that they are “doing the right thing” by meeting demands of the public for big trucks?

In order to compete with the American manufacturers in this competitive segment, they need to spend some money on advertising to build awareness…especially since most people equate Toyota with small, energy efficient cars.

If this sort of article brings down Toyota’s rating, shouldn’t there be one for each and every auto manufacturer that makes a truck?
