According to a recent BusinessWeek article, Wal-Mart to open energy-saving stores, Wal-Mart will be opening the first of a new line of stores that will use less energy, integrating technologies that were developed in two test “green” stores, which opened in 2005.
Innovations mentioned in the article:
- Heating and cooling systems that recycle heat from refrigerators and freezer cases
- Higher-efficiency LED lights and sensors that turn off those lights when no customers are around
“Now we’re applying those experiments in a typical environment,” said Charles Zimmerman, vice president of prototype and new format design for Wal-Mart.

I think this is a good example of a story capturing a company “doing the right thing”. I see this as a step in the right direction that, while saving money for the company (with an organization money is always part of the motivation, even in their philanthopic endeavors), shows that they are paying attention to the increasing need to conserve energy.
