Unions Get Their First Payback - House passes union bill

The multi-millions of dollars that hardworking americans must pay to their unions (no matter their political preference) is coming into play with the new congress. The ironically-named Employee Free Choice Act the union-supported House just passed (and the Senate may or may not turn down) actually takes away some decision-making control from employees (that they currently have) about whether they want to be unionized. It says: no secret voting. It says that, what is now the initial pre-lim. step of stating an interested in joining a union – is the THE vote basically. And it’s not secret so they non-signers can be more easily bullied into doing so.
They are desperate. Their ranks have been deminishing for decades. Because workers understand that the old, inflexible model of working for one giant company for your entire life just doesn’t hold anymore. And that’s the model that unionization depends on – its in its DNA. And aren’t the stories of Detroit, retail, public education and elsewhere enough proof that unions have fatal flaws in their DNA? Flaws that provide short term benefits for workers – but long term ruin.
It’s socially responsible to support workers and businesses: let employees vote for themselves whether they want to inject inflexibilty into their companies.

I was member of UFCW from 1993-99, quit Ralphs, then got hired by Pedus who tagged merchendise for Vons from 2002-todate & did Experience the Grocery strike of 03-04. Today ALL Vons employees who work at Vons since strike are 100% anti Strike. NO one wants to repeat the 03-04 farce. At least NO sane Vons employee. I stocked Dairy Deli for 5 mos since strike took place. I cant see doing Dairy Deli for 5 years. NO one wants to go thru the strike again. I get respect since I know what the Dairy Deli Mgr goes through to stock that store section.
I say Let the employees/members Say Yes to union & Yes or NO IF dues go to Political events etc. Id rather have my Dues IF Union go to: 1. Continued Voc Ed 2. Voc Training 3. Nationwide Vocational Training System 4. Skills Modernization 5. Continued Ed. 6. Placing members in Unions for In Demand Jobs IE\ those from UFCW leave to UAW for work BUT still Union. As is now NO Unions do the above. More Mobster games & politics. Get Real. Dump your Mob look, UFCW. Dump your dated ways. Its 2007 NOT 1957.
If Unions want Members do these: 1. U choose Due rates by Your Income. 2. Continued Voc Ed 3. Career Testing 3. Placing in new jobs outside Home Union 4. Voc Ed at JCs, HS, Colleges co funded 5. More Online Voc Ed 6. Open to Non Members for Voc Ed courses 7. Acess ALL Industries & fields. 8. Lobby for those In Demand Fields. 9. PR Hi Tech & IT more. 10. Open Minded. 11. One Phone source for Info. 12. Improve websites. 13. More 2way feedback given online, phone by Members to union. 14. Union reps take Notes & act on issues. (NO intimidation games). 15. Unions accountable for actions to Members & Public. 16. Can SUE the Union. 17. Change workers Comp 18. DONT Unionize Illegals.
Then Id join a Union job.
Unions bring democracy to otherwise totalitarian corporate power structures.

Granted some unions don’t function this way.
This is either down to them either being infiltrated/busted/corrupted by the corporations they are involved with .
Or this is down to them not being democratic enough / failures in democratic systems generally.
I know your piece is about some union systems being undemocratic, but i think that you are generally anti union. What with all the corporate PR mouthpieces around here, im not surprised.
