This isn’t new news, but in an effort to contribute a story about one of the most pioneering steps taken by any US company to utilize renewable energy sources, I wanted to ensure that this important aspect of Google’s impacts on the environment is considered, prior to the end of the dotherightting evaluation period for the company.
Highlights from the company blog:- Location – Mountain View, CA
- Power – 1.6 megawatts of solar photovoltaic panels
- Energy equivalent – Power of about 1,000 average California homes

Google Solar Pics and Bragging Rights

Google has bragging rights for their solar electric system. See some photos at:
http://www.blueoakenergy.com
Everyone is trying to trump Google’s new PV system which should be 30% of their energy use at the Googleplex. But can they match Google’s style, their corporate commitment, their food? I’d be surprised.
Agreed and considering the unintended consequences

I agree that it is important that Google has installed the solar panels. The first articles I read about Google and energy were related to the enormous amount of energy Google consumed to run and cool their networks, which encouraged me to consider the topic of energy consumption and the internet more fully. These articles were followed by articles touting the solar installation, which is positive step. The consequences of “progress” are always worth pondering. Often, the consequences are unintended and unforeseen. At one moment, it seems extremely positive, for many reasons, that newsprint is replaced by on-line access to information. But, the amount of energy and resources required to power and maintain the internet and the data we store also has an impact. I look forward to learning more about this topic and an analysis of the internet’s potential impact on energy consumption. This topic was reported on in Europe this March as the growth of data and internet usage are projected into the future and the impact on the systems and companies that are in charge of housing and making this data available. Energy consumption is often not considered, but I presume it will be more and more. Having a large footprint on the internet, Google is doing the right thing by installing solar panels and setting a good example. Just as the increased production of bio-fuels has caused a sudden and sharp increase in tortilla prices in Mexico, will we ultimately need to give greater consideration to the amount of energy consumed by internet and look for creative solutions.
