If you have bought a Chiquita banana over the last 10 years, it is very likely that part of the money you spent went to right-wing paramilitary death squads in Colombia (see http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.d…).
Unbelievably, the payments were approved by senior Chiquita executives and hidden in the books of the company. The payments were made to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, a paramilitary group involved in massacres, kidnapping and drug-trafficking.
The Colombian newspaper El Tiempo also reports that a subsidiary of Chiquita was involved in an illegal shipment of automatic weapons destined for the death squads. Colombian authorities are also investigating the shipment of illegal narcotics on Chiquita ship containers bound for Europe. See http://www.eltiempo.com/justicia/2007…

- Chiquita Brands offers bananas as alternative to candy and snacks
- Chiquita Brands is marketing bananas in convenience stores in addition to their usual effort aimed at supermarkets. This gives consumers a healthy alternative to buying a candy bar or “junk food.” There could be some downside to the packaging, in environmental terms. But generally, this is a good technology for keeping bananas “ready-to-eat” and ripe. See the story on NPR: [read more]

Heres one source: those fleeing this internal violence. Thanks Chiquita. Now I wonder who got bribed for this one OR is it using execs family for U Pay or else. I wonder. Inform GW on this. Major trade source. & why cant companies Fund Iraqis to combat Iranians or etc. Yet fund Death squads. See 1980s Miami Vice episode. Now multiply this all over Latin America & Asia. I wonder. & then we wonder why the world sees US as the Great Satan. Company moves like Chiquita. Makes one wonder. Money ruins lives in this case. BUT Chiquita has hold in crop in the US, NOT other sources IE local Vons store.

The U.S. has been involved in Colombia’s Civil conflict since the 1960’s. Directly financing and aiding the Colombian military which has been involved in massacres of innocents under the mask of democracy. Paramilitaries have always been part of Colombian history since independence but in the 1990’s the current Paramilitaries were formed to transfer blame for human rights abuses from the Military. The Military still maintained a relationship with Paramilitaries and the relationship has been proven several times with the Colombian government looking the other way. Currently there is an enormous scandal that has brought out allegations of several congressman of being directly involved with Paramilitaries. Several arrests have been made including the former head of the Colombian secret police ( http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwor… ). In the late 90’s since the U.S. changed policy and decided to again “aid” the Colombian military under the guise of “the war on drugs”. The change in policy was due to the fact that the Colombia military had improved it’s human right’s record. This could only have been achieved because the Paramilitaries are now committing the atrocities. Colombia is now the third largest recipient of U.S. taxpayer dollars (excluding Iraq) on a losing war on drugs. Not only that most of the “aide” goes to the military instead of the National Police and the National Police is the law enforcement body that is responsible for counter-narcotics. With the new war on terror, this means that the U.S. is indirectly aiding state sponsored terrorism and not to mention the hypocrisy since the Paramilitaries are listed as a terrorist organization.
I can honestly say that Colombians do not hate U.S. citizens and actually respect our advanced country and our overall respect for rule of law, but if anyone ever wondered why people around the world hate us. these issues are a good place to start.
