YouTube censors videos on how to detect early signs of cancer

YouTube/Google, with its significant recent pressure from Viacom to pull videos that violate copyright law, has gotten itself into a pickle. While it may seem that Google’s legal team has accepted a truly noble mission to protect and extend the rights of consumers, the team slipped when they let the blurred line between free speech and non-family oriented content lead them to taking down videos that were shared with the world with the sole intent of providing information to help people.
One of Britain’s best-known doctors has accused YouTube, the popular video website, of censoring scenes that show people how to examine their bodies for early signs of cancer. Dr Chris Steele, resident doctor on ITV’s This Morning programme, lambasted YouTube after it made his breast and testicular cancer prevention videos available only to over-18s.
Hopefully Google/YouTube introduces a “safe-search” feature, like they did with Google Images, to avoid future questionable censorship.
