Global and Local Environmental Impact of Packaging

Flag As Inappropriatewolf wolf about 1 year ago about Starbucks

I enjoy Starbucks very much, am a stock holder in the company and have an overall appreciation for their business model. However, I continue to be very concerned about the environmental impact posed by the immense amount of packing that accompanies their product. For example, a tall Americano will typically be double cupped with a cozy. This packaging has an impact on the overall environment and ultimately the waste management systems of the communities where Starbuck stores are located. I would appreciate efforts by Starbucks to experiment by modifying their business processes such that more consumers are offered the “for here” option in order to avoid the disposable containers. Also, Starbucks has not had a “for here” option for the Venti size (only for Grande and Tall). I travel frequently to Europe and appreciate the coffee culture there for many reasons, but the primary reason is that nearly all beverages are served in non-disposable containers. When I first traveled to Europe in 2001, the “take away” coffee concept was not even an option in most shops. Having just returned from Europe, I noticed the sharp increase in both the number of Starbucks stores and in “take away” options promoted and offered by local coffee shops. On the positive side, in Munich, Germany, it appeared that most Starbucks beverages consumed in the store were served in non-disposable containers. However, in Vienna, Austria, most beverages consumed in the store were in disposable containers and many more “take away” coffees were visible on the streets than in Munich. I have concern about entering a foreign market with a “disposable container” business model and the impact this will have on the local communities that do not currently support this business model. In the meantime, I continue to remind myself to request “for here” when I do not intend to leave the shop so that I can consume my beverage in a non-disposable container. With the combination of creativity and compassion exhibited by the Starbucks business model, the potential exists for a very creative solution to this problem.

The fix... be like Ikea

ryan about 1 year ago

Influencing the behavior of people is tricky, and in hearing representatives of Starbucks speak about the environmental impacts of their paper cups, I am convinced that the company wants to minimize the negative impacts of paper cups on the environment (or at least wants to stop getting beat up for it). The recycled paper content in their cups, for example, according to them, is the highest it could be while preserving the structural integrity of the cup itself (I am quoting Ben Packard, who spoke at the Net Impact Conference in Chicago last year).

I believe that the solution to this is to approach consumers in a way that is more likely to encourage a behavior change. Charge for cups! IKEA charges 5 cents for bags, and was praised for doing so. Am I suggesting that Starbucks raise prices of their already premium-priced drinks? No. In fact, the right thing to do, since they recently raised prices would be to drop prices by a nickel, and charge 5 cents, even 10 cents for paper cups. I would also encourage Starbucks to sell reusable travel mugs at cost with a drink in them, taking a more proactive approach to encouraging all l of us to think about the amount of waste we create unnecessarily.

charging for cups?

griffeyphan about 1 year ago

starbucks essentially charges 10 cents for a cup as you receive a 10 cent discount if you bring in your own cup for any beverage and charges you only 50 cents on any coffee if you get a refill making people more likely to refill their coffee in the same cup. As far as double cupping they dont charge which maybe they should look into. Starbucks does offer the venti cup for here as stated above that they do not. Also cold beverages can be made for here but all starbucks do not carry the cold for here cups. Overall they seem to be doing as much as they can while still fulfilling customer needs for taking beverages outside of the store
