EarthFriendlyMoving offers zero-waste packing and moving system

Flag As Inappropriateryan ryan about 1 year ago about EarthFriendlyMoving

I recently moved from Orange County to San Francisco and was reminded, as we all are when we start packing for a move, how much I’ve accumulated, despite my tendency to move somewhat often. Unfortunately, I moved before finding out about EarthFriendlyMoving, an Orange County company that sells everything you need to pack your valued possessions safely, with reuseable materials. It is a great alternative to my showing up to Wal-Mart before they crushed all their boxes, packing with old magazines, and then listing my moving boxes for free on craigslist, in hopes to maximize their use.

EarthFriendlyMoving was launched with the aim of reinventing the way America moves by providing people with packing materials that can be reused, unlike my cardboard boxes, which could only be passed around on Craigslist for so long.

According to the company, we move 16 times in our lifetimes, on average, generating 400 lbs of trash each time. So, they created reusable RecoPack containers, made from hard to recycle plastic waste like bleach, detergent, and oil bottles, which the company rents on a weekly basis for a buck each a week. The company also sells packing paper and peanut alternatives made from recycled paper, all delivered to your door by a biodiesel-powered, environmentally-friendly moving truck (unfortunately he doesn’t rent the trucks themselves, for those of us who wish we had a better alternative to U-Haul or Budget’s gas-guzzlers… I asked).

The icing on the cake: for every move that requires 100 or more RecoPacks, the company is planting a tree on the customer’s behalf. The hope is to plant a million trees with a million moves, a truly honorable goal considering each tree costs the company 50 bucks.

A side note, with my own personal concern: While the team is very proactive about educating its clients about how to move yet minimize their impacts on the environment along the way, I’d like to see the reservation process incorporate the scheduling of pickup appointments for donation and recycling, and perhaps see the company partner with organizations that are most environmentally friendly, since I have been told by people who use an organization like the Salvation Army that the pickup crew admitted that much of what they were accepting would like end up in their trash, which really defeats the point. While this is a touch out of the scope of EFM, what we end up throwing away or giving away has a big impact on what ends up in landfills (perhaps far more than the waste created by the materials with which we move… just drive by the trash area of any home that has recently had tenants move out).

IRS 8283 form supplied by EFM to all clients!

spencerbrown about 1 year ago

Hi Ryan- we offer all Earth Friendly Moving clients the IRS charitable tax deduction form 8283, as well as general information on how to donate specific items (electronic equipment versus an old couch). I agree that when people pack and move- a lot of good items are left behind and go to the landfill. Whenever we see excess property, we make a point to contact local charities that can benefit from these goods. We have even called local churches and charity organizations to help our clients find good use to their excess property. We do this as a proactive service and our clients love when they get a call from a organization that can help them lighten the load! The most recent example was a local clothing designer that had hundreds of samples in her garage when she moved. After her garage/sample sale, we offered a few local numbers and she donated the clothing to a local charity based on our information. Extending the life of any used property ( new or used) is part of the 4 R’s of recycling and we encourage it with every client. We have a company tag line that says “Detox 4 landfills” and not offering earth friendly moving clients this tax deduction opportunity, to claim a deduction for property donated, defeats the original purpose/intent of detoxing our landfills. I think that you have a great point here and we will build in a web link on the updated website that offers all of these forms and direct phone numbers to reputable charities! I have attached the link to obtain the most current copy of the form that we supply to our clients:http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8283.pdf Thanks for taking the time to point out that reducing our landfills also requires proactive effort with everyone involved during a client’s relocation! Earth friendly moving going nationwide

spencerbrown about 1 year ago

Thanks for taking the time to write a post and to suggest a few ideas for earth friendly moving. To date, we have 1,700 Recopacks being rented by a L.A. movie studio for a pilot show that is still filming. They love the Recopacks and have booked 4,000 for a movie coming out in 2008! The grocery stores bins that you mentioned are made from virgin material in bright colors that last about 2 years in service- this material is made from oil and does not reduce our dependence on oil and the material is typically remade into park benches. The Recopack is made from hard to recycle HDPE#2 plastic bottles-typically everything that you find under your kitchen sink, laundry room or garage. These bottles are miracle plastics- as they are stronger than the chemistry they hold. Because of the engineered strength of this hard to recycle plastic, the Recopack will last up to 400 moves- or 10 years in service and rents for 15 cents a day. If you compare this to a cardboard box that costs between 2 and 3 dollars, used maybe two times, and then tossed- expanding our landfills- The Recopack is the solution. When they are aged or broken, we regrind the material and capture 98% of the recycled plastic and remold another Recopack. It’s a cradle to cradle product and it’s “Detox 4 landfills”. I’m glad that you love the earth friendly moving color pallet and we will have a green colored Recopack by end of this year to better define that it’s a green product! The 300 sd Mercedes Benz car is used by our eco- agents to promote earth friendly moving and the Recopack. These custom cars operate on 100% veggie oil and bio diesel! As far as moving clients property as a full service system, we feel that it is best left to the movers and their expertise and management of labor. Our intention from the beginning was to provide America with a green, earth friendly alternative to the cardboard box- because if you think about it- without trees, we’re all fish out of water! Thanks- Spencer Brown founder of earth friendly moving.
