About

What is dotherightthing?

dotherightthing is a place online where you can get unfiltered information about the impacts of companies on people and the world and make it worth their while to "do the right thing."

  • Consumers can learn about which companies will spend their hard-earned dollars in ways that make the world better
  • Investors can learn about which companies focus on doing the right thing today so that they'll be, or continue to be leaders in their markets tomorrow
  • Employees can learn about which companies share their passion for wanting to create more than just financial returns, and truly care about their well-being

On dotherightthing, the community rules. You determine:

  • Which companies get the focus
  • What is relevant
  • Which companies are recognized for doing the right thing

dotherightthing Inc. was founded in 2006, by Ryan Mickle and Rod Ebrahimi, to recognize companies for all the little things (and big things) that add up to make a positive impact on our lives. It is an impact-maximizing, for-profit company, aiming to provide valuable services, without compromising its core mission to help drive more sales, talented employees, and investments in companies that do the right thing. While we could have founded a non-profit to host dotherightthing.com, we strongly believe that companies don’t need to become non-profits to do the right thing.

Show me how to do the right thing!

Team

Ryan

Ryan_thumb Ryan began his career with the Cutler Group LP, an options trading firm which traded on three exchanges, trekking down the streets of San Francisco before sunrise to dispel the mysteries of the stock exchange floors. He then relocated to southern California to start work at Boeing, contributing to development programs contracted to design, build, and test new technologies for the US Air Force and a brand new aircraft for the US Navy. While there, Ryan also led a volunteer team aimed to improve team culture and empower employees, setting several de-facto standards enterprise-wide. He then was recruited by a boutique management consulting firm, based in southern California. While a member of the consulting team, he designed and executed organizational and process changes as well as turned around and managed a critical software implementation project for a multi- billion dollar pharmaceutical company.

In his free time, Ryan enjoys running until it hurts (having completed his first marathon in June of 2006), hiking, traveling, camping with friends, cooking, and getting lost in conversations with like-minded people.

Ryan holds a BA in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and traveled to both the Wharton School and Cambridge University to study leadership and international economics, respectively.

You can learn more about Ryan at his blog, Social Innovations and Daydreams, and contact him directly at ryan at dotherightthing dot com.

Rod

Rod_thumb Rod has been applying technologies in new and innovative ways since 1997. He has spearheaded effective technology efforts, as a consultant and entrepreneur, well before putting his degree on hold for the dot-com revolution in 1999. At the age of 16, following an internship at both Kiva Software and Netscape Communications, he secured funding to launch DirectHOST Internet, an Internet presence provider. Rod also worked in Silicon Valley at Escalate, Inc., a pioneer in e-commerce software and services, where he implemented and maintained Internet and datacenter infrastructure for Fortune 500 clients.

When he isn’t doing the right thing, Rod enjoys traveling to new places in search of culture shock.

Rod holds a BS, with distinction, in Cognitive Science specializing in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of California at San Diego. He also completed a management program for undergraduates at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

He spent a few years participating in the OpenACS community and working on projects for high-profile clients like AIESEC and Greenpeace. After his introduction to Ruby on Rails in the summer of 2004, Jarkko became a highly vocal Rails supporter and evangelist in Europe. He lectures at conferences and consults a wide variety of international clients including Fortune 500 companies and wrote Beginning Ruby on Rails E- Commerce together with Christian Hellsten.
