Frequently Asked Questions
General
- Is this an activist site?
-
By building a community that openly and honestly shares information about the social impacts of companies, dotherightthing is a place where people influence companies to do the right thing. Everyone, including activists and company representatives, are encouraged to participate. The vision for dotherightthing is one that facilitates communication, not taking sides.
- Is dotherightthing a non-profit?
-
No. We believe that a company's tax status has no bearing on its ability to do the right thing. dotherightthing was founded to make a positive impact on people's lives, pioneer doing the right thing, and provide valuable products and services that compliment these goals, without compromise.
- As a for-profit, is there the potential for a conflict of interest where companies influence their ratings on dotherightthing?
No. We created dotherightthing to recognize companies for doing the right thing and will not allow any of our activities to compromise this core mission. dothrightthing will always maintain an open and transparent dialogue with the community about any potential conflicts of interests. By increasing transparency and encouraging community participation, our mission to do the right thing will always be absolutely clear.
- Why should I participate on dotherightthing?
-
You care. You care that while you could personally make a positive impact on your community and the people around you, and minimize your impact on the environment, you are only one person and what you do will always be overshadowed by the decisions made by larger organizations of people. You want to contribute to real change - change that will be felt by people even thousands of miles away from you.
The time you invest makes a big impact - you help companies that already want to do the right thing prioritize to maximize their own impacts on people and the environment. Here, you make it more worthwhile for companies to invest their resources in doing the right things to make the greatest positive impacts.
- What will happen if a company attempts to inflate its own rating?
Companies and their representatives and employees are only permitted to influence ratings by doing the right thing and sharing information about these activities with the dotherightthing community. If a company ever attempts to influence you to inflate its ratings, post that information and reveal evidence of this lapse in integrity to the rest of the world.

Participation
- I work for {insert company name here}, and we do the right thing, how do I participate?
Please see our company participant welcome page.
- Can I participate anonymously?
Absolutely. We recommend that you share as much information about yourself as you are comfortable with. A personal story and profile picture breathes life to the dotherightthing community, maximizing the impact of your contributions. We understand however, that some situations require that these details remain private. It is up to you.
- This is better than sliced bread. I just love it. What can I do to help?
The most impactful thing you can do is to seek out stories about companies doing (or not doing) the right thing that you find important, and share them with the world by posting them on the site. Every time you witness, read, or hear about information that is worth sharing, sprint to the nearest computer and post it for the world to see. Then, send the links to the stories you post and those posted by others that you find important to people who will also find them important. As you spread dotherightthing, be sure to refrain from sending unsolicited mail to strangers and to be respectful and positive.
